FAIRWORK Belgium for Domestic Workers

In 2010, FAIRWORK Belgium launched the empowerment project, FAIRWORK Belgium for Domestic Workers, exclusively for housekeeping staff (with or without legal residence) and young au pairs. They meet every Sunday for information sessions on employment rights, socio-cultural activities, language lessons and training for their emancipation, relieving isolation and strengthening their skills.

Sunday activities have been accessible to housekeeping staff since 2010 and since 2018, we also provide a specific programme for young au pairs.

Domestic staff

We organise meet-ups every Sunday in the centre of Brussels for a group of housekeepers (m/f) (with or without legal residence) mainly from the Philippines and Latin America. During meet-ups, you can take part in the following activities:

  • Training on employement rights: We explain in detail what your employment rights are and how you can protect yourself against exploitation and abuse. All information is provided in English and Spanish. In addition to the formal sessions, we also organise empowerment talks and debates.
  • Socio-cultural activities:
We know that for many of you, Sunday is your only day off, which is why we also organise visits to museums and walks in various Belgian cities, workshops (cookery lessons, for example) and in addition, we are often invited by Filipino and Latin American organisations to take part in their festivals.

All activities for housekeeping staff are completely free of charge and organised in both English and Spanish.

Au pairs

Once a month, since 2018, we have organised socio-cultural activities for au pairs in Belgium only, such as visits to museums & exhibitions, trips to various Belgian cities, workshops etc. This is our way of contributing to the cultural goal of your placement. In addition, we want to put you in contact with other young au pairs so that you can make new friends. It’s our way of contributing to the cultural goal of your placement. In addition, we want to put you in touch with other young au pairs so that you can make new friends.

After every visit, we go for a drink with the whole group and while we’re enjoying an aperitief, we inform you about your employment rights and the statutory conditions your host family must comply with. Naturally, you can also always ask us any questions you might have and share your own experiences with us.

Since we welcome au pairs with more than 20 nationalities, activities are organised in English. All information can also be provided in Dutch, French and Spanish. All activities are completely free of charge for au pairs. FAIRWORK Belgium pays the costs of admission tickets, workshops/guides and the aperitief. All you pay for is your travel.
